BASIC BLACK LETTER: TEXTURA
Textura, the classical Gothic script of Germany, France and the other northern European countries, flourished in the 12th through 15th centuries. Simple and precise, it is the basis of many of the subsequent Gothic forms of calligraphy, including the contemporary Gothicized Italic script. Textura is also an important introduction to the calligraphy of many of the finest illuminated manuscripts of the Middle Ages. In this workshop, we will learn the characteristic forms of this ancient script and then will practice a looser, more informal approach to this most precise of all alphabets. This is a workshop in minuscules only.
GOTHICIZED ITALIC is a modern Black Letter script that combines the grace and legibility of Italic with the density and ornamental qualities of Gothic calligraphy. Based on Edward Johnston's "Black Italic", this alphabet can be used as a contemporary substitute for the hard-to-read Gothic scripts of the middle Ages. Gothicized Italic is a minuscule alphabet that can be combined successfully with various capital letter styles. It is one of the most beautiful variations on the ever-popular Gothic calligraphic styles.
(SOLD OUT) COPPERPLATE FLOURISHING
The addition of flourishes to a page or even a line of Copperplate adds an individual decorative quality to the alphabet. Through a series of pencil exercises and simple drawing techniques, students are introduced to some of the basic forms and patterns of 18th century Copperplate flourishes and cartouches. In this workshop, students learn to choose how, when and where to use flourishing in order to create a visually exciting layout.
COPPERPLATE BOOTCAMP
This workshop provides an in-depth review of the basics, with an emphasis on improving skills, exploring letter variations and developing an understanding of positive and negative space by focusing on "spacing," the essential element that separates beginners from more skilled calligraphers. We will discuss some of the rules that can be broken -- or stretched -- and others that cannot. The aim of the class is for Copperplate calligraphers at all levels not only to improve their personal skill level, but to develop the ability to move forward through informed practice and self-critique.

About Eleanor Winters
Eleanor Winters has been an active participant in the international calligraphy movement for more than three decades. A commercial as well as fine-art calligrapher, she is the author of five calligraphy books:
- Calligraphy in Ten Easy Lessons (Dover Publications, 1984),
- Mastering Copperplate Calligraphy (Dover, 1989),
- Calligraphy for Kids (Sterling Publishing , 2004),
- 1-2-3 Calligraphy (Sterling Publishing, 2006),
- and Italic and Copperplate Calligraphy (Dover, 2011).
She is currently working on her next book, Remembering the Children, a collection of calligraphic paintings commemorating the children deported from Paris during World War II who died in the Nazi concentration camps.
She served as Director of the Calligraphy Workshop in New York City for 25 years, taught as a Professor of Art at Long Island University from 1990 – 2005, and is currently on the faculty of the New York Society of Scribes calligraphy program. She teaches workshops in the US and Europe and has visited Asia as a calligraphy instructor numerous times, including two month-long teaching trips in 2014 and 2015. As a fine art calligrapher, Eleanor has exhibited her work in museums and galleries in the US and Europe. She divides her time between New York and Paris.
