Offhand Flourishing Workshlp: Although the letters and words of American penmanship created the legendary writing styles of the Golden Age of Penmanship, it was the dramatic, delicate and complex designs of Off-Hand Flourishing that captured the attention of everyone who wanted to become skilled in decorative handwriting. In our workshop, students will be introduced to the patterns of this remarkable writing technique, from simple cartouches to bird designs that seem ready to fly off of the page. Techniques of compound curvature, multiple and spiraling curves, and the secret of Superscription will be brought to life by Master Penman Michael Sull. Original specimens of vintage flourishing and Ornamental penmanship will be on hand for study.
Beginning Spencerian Workshop : Beginning with an overview of the fundamental principles of movement, curvature, contrast and variability, emphasis on the correct use of the hand and arm muscles, proper posture, pen, points, ink and paper position will be explained in detail. Thorough instruction in the lowercase and capital letters, followed by student practice with Cross-Drill exercises, single letters, words and sentences will give each student a comprehensive introduction to this unique form of vintage penmanship. As an added benefit, Michael will have a rare scrapbook of original penmanship specimens from the famous Master Penmen to share with the students throughout the workshop. Michael's handmade oblique penholders, as well as other supplies will be available for purchase. Ornamental Penmanship (Advanced Spencerian) Workshop: After the steel pen point was introduced in the second half of the 19th century, penmen delighted in transforming Spencerian Script into a highly decorative handwriting style that became known as Ornamental Penmanship. Dramatic shading of capital letters, multiple ovals and curves that twisted and turned, highly elaborate flourishing of both the lowercase and capitals and the addition of delicate non- lettering patterns such as plume, quill, scroll, cartouche and bird designs combined to make Ornamental Penmanship the most beautiful handwriting of Penmanship's Golden Age. In our workshop, students will be introduced to the techniques of writing this exquisite style that became known as the most beautiful handwriting of Western civilization.
Original penmanship specimens and publications from America's Golden Age of Penmanship will be on display for study. This will be a rare opportunity to travel back in time and learn the secrets of Ornamental Penmanship!
